Toyota had launched the facelifts of its popular IMV-platform based vehicles, the Innova and Fortuner in other parts of the world a few months back. The Indian division refused to acknowledge the necessity to bring the upgrade here as both the vehicles were doing excellent sales numbers. However, Toyota has now confirmed that both the Innova facelift and Fortuner facelift will be showcased at the upcoming Auto Expo in New Delhi next year. However, the vehicles will be launched in the later part of January and not at the Expo itself. The facelifted Innova was spotted in Goa, undergoing an ad shoot.

The changes to both the Innova and Fortuner are mostly cosmetic with the addition of a few features. No mechanical alterations have been made to either vehicle and both cars continue to be powered by their fantastic D4-D motors, which are highly refined and fuel efficient. There will be no automatic option on the 2012 Innova, but Toyota plans to offer the 2-wheel drive of the Fortuner with both manual and automatic versions. The 4-wheel drive version will be available in manual variant only. These facelifts are not significant but will keep both the models look fresh even as they continue to get the volumes for the Japanese automaker.

Toyota has not been keen to admit about the arrival of the facelifted version of the Fortuner in India, as the company struggles to meet demand for its popular SUV. Hoever, the Japanese automaker has secretely been testing the mamoth vehicle near its plant in Bangalore and YouTuber wicky3453 was quick to tape the car on the city roads. This is not the first time the 2012 Toyota Fortuner has made its appearance in India, it was earlier spotted in Delhi with an automatic gearbox.

However other than the small costmetic changes to the exteriors and interiors, there is nothing much different in Fortuner facelift, which is expected to debut at the 2012 Auto Expo. The mechnicals remain untouched and the Fortuner will continue to be powered by the fantastic 3.0-liter D4-D oil burner which produces 170 BHP of power at 3600 RPM and 343 Nm of torque at 1400 RPM. A 2-wheel drive version could be launched as well. Expect a slight price hike with the updated Fortuner.

After Toyota introduced the Fortuner facelift in the International market it had to hit the Indian shores very soon and here it is. Spied in Delhi the new Fortuner Facelift in all its might draped in white is wearing a Prado like grille. The new Fortuner seems more matured and a part of the Toyota SUV family. Engine options are expected to be the same 3.0-liter masculine motor but the spy snaps show the presence of an autobox which is a welcoming alteration in the car. With the autobox in place the king of the segment will even cater to the niche market which looks forward for the Automatic version which currently is overshadowed by the Ford Endeavour. There are talks about the 4X2 version for the new Fortuner which will be priced lower to cater to a larger target audience.

The New Fortuner comes with a DVD touch screen system, new headlight, tail lamps, new design alloys, intercooler scoop, new bumpers and a few more things. We can spot this new Fortuner in the Auto Expo 2012 which will be held in January. Looking at the previous Fortuner there is no doubt this one will sell in volumes even in Tier II cities.

Toyota recently launched the facelifted Fortuner in Thailand. The 7-seater SUV now gets revised styling to make it look fresh along with more treatment of chrome on the exteriors. The alloy wheels design is new and the interior has been slightly refreshed. The instrument cluster has been redesigned and equipment levels have been increased with projector headlamps and Bluetooth connectivity debuting on the 2012 Toyota Fortuner. The engines remain unchanged and are the same 3.0-liter and 2.5-liter D4-D diesel units producing 163 bhp and 144 bhp respectively. The 2.7-liter VVT-i motor produces 160 bhp of power but it is only the 3.0-liter oil burner which is sold in India and will continue to do when the new Fortuner goes on sale early next year.

Toyota has launched the Fortuner facelift in Thailand. The 2012 Fortuner now features an upgraded exterior as well as a slight revision to the interiors. The Fortuner was launched way back in 2005 and the current facelift is a minor one, till an all new model arrives in 2013. The changes, which are purely cosmetic make the Toyota Fortuner look fresh. The Fortuner now looks sharper and the interiors appear to be more luxurious than before. The changes are welcome and make the SUV a more appealing car. However, due to the success and high demand of the Fortuner, Toyota does not plan to launch the facelift anytime soon.

The steering wheel, which used to be borrowed from the Innova now seems to be right out of the Camry. The changes in colours on the dashboard are very evident. The dashboard lacks any kind of beige treatment and this is nothing to do with the facelift. Indians love beige and wood and thus the Fortuner sold locally feature them as standard. When launched in India, Toyota could take advantage of the success and popularity of the Fortuner by hiking its price drastically.

The Toyota Fortuner might be commanding a solid waiting period in India, but back in other Asian countries it doesn’t. Toyota first introduced the Fortuner in Thailand in 2005. The SUV got a slight facelift in 2008 and that is the same model on sale in India. However another refresh was expected soon and now some images have leaked onto the internet ahead of the 2012 Toyota Fortuner’s official unveiling. As can be seen in the picture above, there is not much new on the new Toyota Fortuner. A slight change in the grille, headlights, bumper, alloy wheels, tail lights and interior is what the 2012 Toyota Fortuner is all about. But don’t get excited too soon.

Firstly there is no mechanical changes to the 2012 Toyota Fortuner whatsoever. Secondly when launched, Toyota will certainly exploit the idea of a price hike and you will end up paying more for nothing really more! And thirdly and most importantly, Toyota is yet to decide on the launch of the new Fortuner in India. The SUV has been doing very well for the Japanese automaker and commands a waiting period. In the light of the above, Toyota has its last priority on launching a refresh and we might end up with the new Fortuner only by the end of April, next year.

Toyota and Autocar have brought back the Fortuner Boot Camp in 2011. The Japanese automaker will conduct the event for Fortuner owners not in one city like last year but three cities, namely Mumbai, Bangalore and Delhi. The Fortuner Boot Camp has a specially built off-road track to showcase the Fortuner’s off-road capabilities. All Fortuner owners are free to participate, with entries being on a first come first serve basis. The Bengaluru event is the first one to start, which is tomorrow and day after (23 -24 April). Toyota is working on a new and updated version of the Fortuner. The 2012 Toyota Fortuner will be launched after the Etios Liva and will feature cosmetic upgrades along with an automatic transmission. The 4-speed auto box will be same used in the Thailand Fortuner and is nothing to write home about. The company also plans to improve the ride quality of the popular SUV to make it more comfortable. The top of line 2012 Toyota Fortuner AT will be priced around Rs. 30 lakhs, making it lose the value for money proposition which makes the car so much in demand. The reason for the upgrade is to hike the price to counter the high demand, which is not such a good strategy. With the new pricing, Toyota will be competing with premium brands including the BMW X1. The increased pricing will also bring the Fortuner in direct competition with the Hyundai Santa Fe, which is one of the most powerful SUVs in the Indian market today.

The Toyota Fortuner’s interiors would be given a slight upgrade to justify the new pricing. A more modern audio system will be present on the upcoming version.

Toyota India has launched a Sports Package for the Fortuner. The Toyota Fortuner Sports Package is priced at Rs. 42,650/-. The Sports Package features floor mats, rear spoiler, muffler cutter, front and rear skirts. Although the kit does not offer any performance boost to the Fortuner in any way, it will appeal to Fortuner owners who wish to make their SUVs stand out of the crowd.

Toyota India has re-opened Fortuner bookings once again. The company had to close bookings of the Fortuner owing to large demand then anticipated. However the company has been able to clear the backlog of this popular SUV and started to take bookings again. Recently BMW had launched the X1 at a very aggressive price, so keeping that in my mind, we doubt bookings of the Fortuner will be closed any time soon.
