Before Seeking For ICE ADVICE (IMPORTANT MUST READ)

    These are really good tips and if any corrections please do so.
    1. Don't fill high octane fuel in our vehicle unless recommended.
    2. Don't use additives in fuel unless know what it really does to ur engine.
    3. Don't inflate tires with Nitrogen gas in India.
    4. During emergency use both front and rear brakes(Bikes).
    5. Never use handbrake(parking brake) while driving a car unless u do that for drifting.
    6. During cold weather using mechanical cranking(kick starter) instead of Electric start.
    7. Idle the engine for few seconds before throttling in the morning(after long time of not running the engine).
    8. Never shift to neutral on a downhill.
    9. Never switch off the ignition on a downhill.
    10. To get better mileage use gradual throttling.
    11. Don't downshift to lower gears at higher rpms.First use brake to slow then downshift(Engine braking is not safe for road driving mostly).
    12.Last use helmet and wear seat belt.

          If not done correctly, could lead to mismatch of engine and real speeds, leading to the vehicle skidding.

            Appreciate the effort vgeh. A couple of questions from my side.
            1. Whats wrong in shifting into neutral on downhill unless you need engine braking.? For example, running down a flyover, if you get into neutral, wont you save fuel (marginally of course) as you will running the engine in default revs. (1000 in most cases).
            2. NEVER EVER switch off engine on downhill, one of my patients did that and the steering locked and a major disaster was averted. Of course he needed a few root canals after that, but nothing major.

              Actually Javeid contry to belief, shifting to neutral downhill does not save as much fuel as coasting in gear with foot completely off the accelerator. Let me explain -

              1) When we shift to neutral, the engine keeps running at idling RPM. Using fuel continuously.

              2) When we coast in gear with the throttle completely closed, the engine uses almost no fuel. It seems impossible but its true. I'l give you a real life example which I have experienced first hand and which you can try sometime as well, of course on a empty road and not at high speed.

              Example - When you are in neutral going downhill and you switch off engine, the engine will immediately die down. It will simply switch off

              - When you are coasting, in gear-no accelerator, and you turn ignition key to 'OFF', the engine will not switch off. It will keep running, it may seem slowing down, but not by much. If you press clutch and/or shift to neutral, the engine immediately switches off.

              I do not have any literature presently to give as a source, but will try to post if I find it. Also long after I discovered this I was watching an old 'Top Gear' episode, at the time when they did do serious car advice as well . They too said the exact same thing. That if we coast in gear for a signal or down a slope we use almost no fuel but if we shift to neutral, fuel is used up to keep car idling.

                That is interesting, so basically we need to try both ways to find out the mileage we get in both situations. However it makes sense to coast in gear but sometimes your speed is so low that you can't be in top gear.

                  I feel, steering will lock only if Key removed ?

                      Why do we need such experiment with our cars/bike? Just to save few drops of fuel?
