The German luxury car manufacturer, Audi has finally showcased one of the most popular and awaited models at the ongoing Geneva Motor Show. Launched first in 1996, the all new Audi A3 is radically innovative and different in many areas. The car comes with new versions like Hybrid and Alternative Drive Systems which include natural gas. Audi says that currently another version namely e-gas is under development and will be launched soon. The new car has been made ultra-lightweight compared to the previous models. The 2013 Audi A3 is now 80 kgs lighter.

The new exterior gets new headlamps, a slightly re-designed front grille and new front bumpers. It also gets sharp dynamic lines both at the front on the engine cover and on the side doors. The Audi A3 measures 4237mm in length and 1421mm in height which is almost similar to the previous model. However, the overall wheelbase has been increased by 23mm to 2601mm. currently Audi is offering 2 TFSI petrol, namely the 1.4 and 1.8 litre and 1 TDI diesel engine of 2.0 litre capacity for the A3. The 1.4 litre TFSI produces 122 BHP of power and a torque of 200Nm at 1500 RPM.

On the other hand, the 1.8 litre TSFI produces 180 BHP of power and 250Nm of torque between 1250 and 5000 RPM. The 2.0 litre TDI engine produces 150 BHP of power and 320 Nm of torque. The petrol engine combines direct injection and supplemental injection into the injection pipe for fuel delivery. Audi claims the 2.0 litre TDI can do a 0 to 100 km/h in just 8.6 seconds and can reach a top speed of 216 km/h. Fuel economy stands at 65.37 US mpg with an equivalent CO2 emission of 106 g/km. The 1.4 litre TFSI and 2.0 litre TDI engines are mated to a 6 speed transmission. The 1.8 litre TFSI gets a 7 speed S-tronic transmission. In all the cases, the power is sent to the front wheels with plans to offer Audi’s Quattro all-wheel drive in all the variants very soon.

Audi does plan to launch the A3 in India as early as 2013. The company will position the Audi A3 to maximise its sales in order to boost its volumes in the highly competitive yet growing Indian car market. The Audi A3 offered in India will be a saloon version and will be priced around Rs. 22 lakhs (ex-showroom, Mumbai). The Audi A3 is based on Volkswagen’s MQB platform and will be locally assembled at Aurangabad via the CKD route.
