Hyundai Motor Co has added a third shift in a plant in southern India to raise production of its i10 hatchback, the company said, as part of a plan to make India its global manufacturing hub for small cars.

Hyundai was planning to sell the i10 in the U.S market but its highly unlikely they will sell there. Though buyers in the U.S are looking towards smaller and more efficient cars, the i10 is too small a hatch for the American markets.

Hyundai plans to take on Maruti’s A-Star, Splash and the Swift by launching a diesel powered version of the hot selling i10. The i10 diesel engine would really make a dent in Maruti’s small car sales.

Hyundai Motor India Ltd on Tuesday rolled out the i10 powered by the all new 1.2-litre Kappa engine at its plant in Chennai. The in-line, four-cylinder, 1.2 litre engine while adding to the power will also deliver greater operational efficiency in terms of both fuel consumption and emissions, claimed the company in a press release.
