Maruti Suzuki has launched the new 2012 Swift DZire. Prices start at 4.79 Lakhs for the Lxi Model.The new Swift DZire is the next generation version of the DZire and measure under 4-meters, giving Maruti Suzuki the crucial benefits on excise duties. The Swift DZire was launched for the first time in 2008 and now has a much smaller boot capacity of 316-litres, owing to the small boot to make the vehicle a compact sedan. The exteriors are very similar to the Swift but Maruti Suzuki engineers have differentiated it from the hatchback with changes made to the front grille, front bumper and alloy wheels. The interiors too are the same but the Maruti Swift DZire now features beige interiors on the lower half of the dashboard to create that airy feeling!

Maruti Suzuki has offered the Swift DZire for an introductory price. These prices are around Rs. 25,000/- cheaper than the outgoing model, which will be repositioned and stripped of features to be sold in the taxi market. The petrol Maruti Swift DZire will reach 100 kmph in 12.6 seconds, whereas the diesel will reach 100 kmph in 14.8 seconds. Top speed of the DZire is 160 kmph. The 2012 Maruti Swift Dzire is available in Blue, Grey, Red, Beige, Black, White and Silver colours.

The Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire is powered by 1.2-litre petrol and diesel engines. The petrol DZire produces 86 BHP of peak power at 6000 RPM and 11.6 KGM of peak torque at 4000 RPM. The diesel on the other hand produces 74 BHP of peak power at 4000 RPM and 19.3 KGM of peak torque at 2000 RPM. Both these engines are mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox but the petrol DZire also gets the option of a 4-speed automatic in VXi trim (along with ABS). The ARAI certified mileage for the petrol manual is 19.1 kmpl, petrol automatic is 17.4 kmpl, while the diesel DZire returns an impressive 23.4 kmpl. The fuel tank capacity is the same as the Swift at 42-litres, while the turning radius is just 4.8 meters.

Maruti Suzuki will be launching the all new Swift DZire on the 1st of February, 2012. The new DZire is a sub 4-meter compact sedan and is based on the new Swift. The next generation DZire has some key changes which will help Maruti Suzuki to maintain its position in the segment. The new Swift DZire won’t be priced any cheaper, even though it enjoys excise benefits. Expect prices to range between Rs. 5-7.3 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi) for the new DZire. Maruti Suzuki has invested close to Rs. 230 crore on the new Swift DZire, which they claim have 150 new features. The old Swift DZire will not be discontinued and will cater to the taxi segment. The boot space has decreased from 440-liters to 316-liters!

The 2012 Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire will be powered by the same engines which do duty on the all new Swift. The 1.2-liter K-series petrol engine uses VTT to produce 87 PS of peak power at 6000 RPM and 114 Nm of peak torque at 4000 RPM. The diesel engine remain unchanged and is the fantastic 1.3-liter DDiS (Fiat Multijet) motor which produces 75 PS of peak power at 4000 RPM and 190 Nm of peak torque at 2000 RPM. The diesel engine will be mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox, while the petrol will be mated to both a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed automatic transmission (VXi variant only, comes with ABS as standard). The ARAI certified mileage figure for the diesel variant is 23.4 kmpl, while the petrol version returns 19.1 kmpl.

Coming to the appearance of the Swift DZire, the new model looks far better and proportionate compared to the model it replaces. The exteriors are similar to the Swift hatchback but Maruti Suzuki has used a new front grille, slightly different front bumper, new wheel caps and alloy wheels. The interiors are the same as the Swift’s though but get beige treatment at the low half of the dashboard. We are yet to understand the compromise made between boot space and rear seat legroom as the new Swift DZire is shorter than the old one. With over 3.2 lakh units of the DZire sold till date, the next generation model will keep the momentum going for Maruti in the C-segment. The new Swift DZire will roll out from Maruti Suzuki’s manufacturing plant in Manesar and will compete with the Toyota Etios (or is it the other way around?).

The country’s largest maker, Maruti Suzuki will be launching the sedan version of its most popular hatchback model, the Swift. The new Swift sedan is rumoured to be called as Swift 3.99, since the car has been designed with its overall length below 4 metre to get excise duty benefits. Thus, the company looks forward to expand its portfolio to 3 body styles on the same platform to gain profits and also work around the Government’s excise duty structure. The new Swift 3.99 is expected to be priced Rs. 50,000 below the current Swift Dzire and it is definitely going to plug the gap with the new Swift hatch positioned below.

“The Dzire sales are still strong enough to not pull it out of the market. Adding a third body style in the Swift range will mean incremental volumes without much higher investments, especially when auto sales are slowing and companies are looking to delay capacity expansion,” an industry expert said.

This however, is not any new strategy. The same business concept is being followed by many global companies like Toyota, Volkswagen and Tata Motors. Tata Motors used the same business concept when it launched the Indica, Indigo, Indigo CS (sub 4 metre) and the Indigo XL (longer variant) all based on the same platform. Having a different offering in each egment gives the customers plenty of choice while buying the car of their choice while allowing the companies to keep the development costs low. Maruti Suzuki is setting up its second manufacturing facility in Manesar with a focus on increasing the production capacity of the company and the launch of the new Swift 3.99 is timed along with that. By January, daily production at the second new assembly line at Manesar is being increased to 900 units, from the current 200, taking the total capacity to around 2,100 units a day. Increasing the production capacity will help in meeting the demand for the additional models since the company is already facing lot of backlog for the Swift. Currently the Swift and the Dzire are among the most popular models with diesel variants accounting for more than 80% of the total sales. In November, the Dzire accounted for about 13 per cent (10,403 units) of Maruti Suzuki’s sales, while around a lakh customers are still waiting for delivery of the new Swift.

Maruti Suzuki is buckling up for all the losses it has made under the workers strike, it has hired new workers and the production of the cars is going on in full force. If you remember earlier we told you regarding a sub 4-meter Swift Dzire which was spied by Autocar, the company officials have confirmed that the smaller Dzire is doing test runs at the production factory. The Dzire which is based on the extended new Swift platform will come in a new avatar which will cut short the boot size to save off the excise duty. Earlier the Dzire would attract 22% excise duty which made it a little more expensive car.

Looking at the current situation when we have cars like Etios, Maruti Suzuki is under serious threat as Etios is slowly eating up the Dzire’s market as it is priced lower than the Dzire and wears the Toyota badge. With the shorter boot the Dzire will now attract only 10% excise duty and the benefits of the cost saving will be passed on to the buyer. So if the earlier Dzire was priced at Rs. 4.94 lakhs, the new one should cost roughly 4.49 lakhs (all prices ex showroom). We haven’t factored in the price increase for the next generation Swift Dzire, which should be around Rs. 30,000/- (still making the new version cheaper than the outgoing model).

There are around 20 such new Swift Dzire’s in the plant being tested out of which a few are left hand drive models, which means Maruti Suzuki is not only looking at the domestic market but also markets outside India where people prefer smaller, fuel efficient cars due to global economy slowdown and rising fuel prices such as Europe and Latin America. The new Dzire is all set to be showcased at the 2012 Auto Expo held at New Delhi in January.

If you think Tata Nano is the only car which ignites, think again. Today morning a Maruti Swift DZire caught fire in Mumbai. The car was just three months old, when it ignited due to engine overheating at Vikhroli highway. Thankfully no one was injured but the car was gutted down completely due to the fire. The driver was coming from Aurangabad towards Mumbai. Now there can be various reasons for the fire, but till further evidences are not revealed, we cannot analyze why this happened. Hopefully this is a one off and not an inherent problem with the DZire, which hasn’t caught any fire till before this. Maruti Suzuki was unable to respond on this issue as they are busy dozing off bigger fires in Manesar.

We have already seen a spy shot of the upcoming all new Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire. The car certainly did not look impressive but now these renderings bring in some hope for prospective DZire buyers. The 2012 Swift DZire doesn’t look all that bad in these rendered images. Yes, it could be much better but the target of keeping the new DZire under 4 meters has led to such a compressed boot. At the end of the day, the DZire will save on crucial excise duty which will result in savings for the customer.

Maruti Suzuki will launch the new Swift in the next couple of months. Now naturally the company will also launch the next generation Swift DZire, which the company had claimed to have build ground up. The current DZire is a control plus C and control plus V job but the new DZire was expected to be aesthetically pleasing. However its all but that. The 2011 Swift DZire was spotted in Gurgaon and is based on the 2011 Swift. It has a very small boot and will help the company benefit from less than 4 meter excise duty rule. With engine capacities at 1.2 liters for the petrol and 1.3 liters for the diesel, the new DZire will come in the 10% excise bracket, against the 22% which is applied on cars measuring above 4 meters in length. This should result in a cost saving of atleast Rs. 40,000/-.

The new DZire will have more expensive components and so will the new Swift. But with the lower duties on the DZire, we expect the new one to cost the same as the current one. The only thing we are confused about is, how will Maruti position the new Swift, which is expected to cost much more than the outgoing model. Maruti Suzuki is on stock clearing mode. First with the Grand Vitara Silky Edition and now the Swift Glam Limited Edition. Maruti wants to clear stocks to make way for the Swift Petrol with the K12M engine. The K-Series engine has dual benefits, its Bharat IV compliant and the Swift will benefit from 4% excise duty omission. The Maruti Swift Glam Limited Edition is only available in petrol and only in VXi. It costs approx Rs. 20,000/- more than the Swift VXi. Maruti wouldn’t care to launch it in diesel when the diesel is selling so well.

The Maruti Swift DZire was launched in March 2008, and though we find the car quite weird looking it has set the sales chart on fire with average monthly sales of 5,000 units. Maruti sold 61,952 units of the Swift DZire in the last fiscal. The sedan version of the hatchback Swift is available in both petrol and diesel variants and has replaced its phased out entry-level sedan-Esteem. The car is giving its competitors, Mahindra-Renault’s Logan, Tata Motors’ Indigo and Hyundai Accent a tough run for its money. Infact the DZire is such a massive success, it is predicted to be best selling car of 2008-09.

“We have continuously scaled up production for Swift DZire but the demand is still far ahead. The car, which is promoted as a vehicle that meets all aspirational needs, will continue to see healthy growth in demand even in such a downturn,” said Mayank Pareek, executive officer (sales and marketing), Maruti Suzuki.

The demand for DZire has been way beyond the company’s expectation at about 5,000 units a month. This is especially higher than other models in the same (A3) segment, with record bookings of about 1,500-2,000 units every month. About 65% demand for Swift DZire is for the diesel variant. Maruti Swift Dzire is equipped with advanced features which make it an enticing buy. Unlike the Maruti Swift which is made in several countries, Maruti Suzuki plans to build the Maruti Swift Dzire exclusively in India. However the Maruti Swift Dzire may be exported to several countries.
