Finally the date has been revealed. Piaggio will be launching the Vespa scooter on the 26th of April 2012. The launch will be taking place in Mumbai, which will be followed by the inauguration of the Vespa plant in Baramati. Mr. Matteo Colaninno, Group President, Piaggio will be present on the occasion. The Vespa has been a long time coming but has been delayed on multiple occasions due to the delay in the setting up of the dealership network. Piaggio will start with 50 dealers of the Vespa, which will be expanded in due course of time.

Piaggio will be launching the Vespa LX125 scooter which will be powered by a 124 cc engine, producing 10.26 BHP of peak power at 8250 RPM and 9.6 Nm of peak torque at 7250 RPM. The engine is mated to an automatic CVT gearbox. The air-cooled motor is expected to produce around 50 km/l, thanks to a weight of 114 kgs. The fuel tank is a rather generous 8.5-litres, which will give the Vespa a good range. The Vespa LX125 will be available in 7 colours namely red, silver, yellow, orange, blue, black and white.

Clearly Piaggio is not looking at selling many units of the Vespa as the Italian automaker is looking to position the scooter as a lifestyle product. A range of accessories will be offered as well, which will help riders differentiate their rides from others. The Vespa LX125 will be priced at a slight premium over its nearest competitors that include the Suzuki Access 125 and upcoming Yamaha Ray scooter. Expect an ex-showroom price of around Rs. 60,000/- for the Vespa, which will be offered in two variants (with disc brake and without disc brake).
