2014 Mahindra Scorpio

It has been a decade now, ever since Mahindra launched the Scorpio. And then, it has just been a success story, with Scorpio being launched in variants ranging from a stripped down budget variant to a six-speed fully automatic and loaded variant. Today, it is the largest selling SUV in India. Not just that, the success story of Scorpio is also among the elite case studies at Harvard Business School. Perhaps it might not be a rags to riches story, but yes, the move from tractor manufacturer to a SUV manufacturer is definitely one of the sought stories. In the last ten years, more than 4,00,000 units of the Scorpio were sold.

So, is Mahindra just reaping the benefit from their successful offering or are they upto something? Well, it shouldn’t come as a surprise if we say that the company is planning something great to come up with the next generation Scorpio. A team of dedicated individuals are working day and night on the new Scorpio, which has been codenamed “W105”. This new model is expected to hit the showroom in a matter of just two years.

“We always have to do things to it in terms of product and marketing to ensure it continues to stay on track. But whatever we do, we would ensure that the customer sees it as the next generation Scorpio and not a new car or a new SUV”, Pawan Goenka, President, Mahindra, said.

So, what is that new thing the “W105” can probably have? Though Mr. Goenka is not very keen on sharing much of the details, it is expected that it will have subtle design changes and perhaps have a even more rugged appearance. Rumours are around that a more powerful engine would be provided which would complement the new style of the SUV. May be it’s the celebration for completion of a decade, that the automaker plans to do something different, but obvious reasons could be the stiff competition that the company expects to face in the near future. Companies like Maruti Suzuki, Ford, Toyota, General Motors, Nissan are developing products that would compete against the Scorpio in the next few years. So, it is left to our imagination what “W105” has in store for us. The wait isn’t that long!
