Biking enthusiasts have been waiting for Yamaha’s 250cc motorcycle for a long time now and their wait might soon get over. Yamaha Indonesia has confirmed their plans to launch a 250cc bike later this year. The Japanese automaker is said to be in advanced stages of development of their quarter litre bike, which will feature a single-cylinder engine, thereby being priced quite aggressively. Set to rival Honda’s CBR250R, KTM’s Duke 200 and Kawasaki’s Ninja 300, the upcoming Yamaha R250 will be based on the R125 motorcycle.

Thus the styling of the R250 will be almost identical to the R125 (pictured here). The sharing of body parts with the R125 will help Yamaha cut development costs drastically. Yamaha will first launch the R250 in Indonesia with an India launch expected in 2014. Yamaha’s India management has also confirmed its plans to launch a 250cc bike in India next year and we hope it is this very R125 based machine. With local production, this Yamaha sports bike should be priced around the Rs. 2 lakh mark.

Details about the upcoming Yamaha 250cc remain as sketchy as ever, but we can expect Yamaha to outrun the competition like it always has. Thus the upcoming performance bike should develop atleast 25 BHP of power with around 20 Nm of torque. The full faired motorcycle should be offered with ABS, although we expect the brakes to be stupendous even without this technology. The 2014 Auto Expo is the ideal platform to unveil the Yamaha R250 in India, as the Yamaha stall is the most crowded at the said motor show.

Next year a slew of performance motorcycles (200-400cc) will hit Indian showrooms, thereby giving prospective buyers a wide range of options to choose from. The Indian biker is sure to get spoilt for choice.
