2015 Hyundai i20

The Hyundai i20 made its global debut in 2008, while the mid-cycle refresh was introduced by the automaker in 2012. The i20 is due for a makeover now and Hyundai has been spotted testing the next generation i20 recently in South Korea. From the looks of the test mule, the next generation i20 appears to have a low and sporty stance, as the window line of the rear has been treated sleekly. Don’t mistake the front of the test vehicle with the second generation i10 test car, as they might be similar at the front but the side profile clearly reveals it’s the i20 on test.

Hyundai is expected to differentiate the next generation i20 over the existing one significantly with additional high tech features and equipment. The next generation Hyundai i20 is likely to be based on the current platform and is expected for a 2014 global debut. At present, Hyundai offers the i20 in India with three engine options. The 1.2-litre petrol engine produces 84 BHP of power with 116 Nm of torque, mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. The 1.4-litre CRDi diesel engine produces 90 BHP of power with 224 Nm of torque, mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. The 1.4-litre petrol produces 100 BHP of power and 139 Nm of torque, which is mated to only a 4-speed automatic transmission.

Some of the engine options from the current generation Hyundai i20 are expected to trickle down to the second generation model. The i20 is known for its segment first features and the successor will also be treated with similar content. For the time being, Hyundai is betting big on the next generation i10 (Hyundai Brilliant), which is said to be benchmarked against the Volkswagen Up!. The Hyundai Brilliant will boast an all new avatar with a diesel engine option and longer equipment list, which is due for an October launch in India this year.
