Recently, Maruti Suzuki had announced their plans to enter the LCV (Light Commercial Vehicle) segment in India in the coming years. The expected model to be launched by the automaker is the Carry, which has just got a makeover in Japan. The Suzuki Carry remained largely untouched since its launch in the international market 14 years back. The new model gets significant changes inside out including the mechanicals. The Carry is available in both short wheelbase and long wheelbase versions. It is made of high tensile steel that’s lighter and safer than its predecessor.
On the outside, the Suzuki Carry looks like any other conventional LCV that features broad headlamp cluster up front with fog lamps on the bumper and a wide grille. The interiors are now upgraded with better upholstery and improved design. There are more convenient features such as power steering, air conditioning and audio system. Powering the Carry is a 3-cylinder, 600cc petrol engine that produces 50 PS of power with 63 Nm of torque, mated to a 5-speed manual and 3-speed automatic transmission. The Suzuki Carry also comes with a rear 2-wheel drive and 4-wheel drive options.
On the safety front, Suzuki has provided the range topping models of the Carry with dual airbags and ABS. The new model will hit the showrooms in Japan on September 20th with a price range of 6,65,000 yen (Rs. 4.51 lakhs) to 11,35,050 yen (Rs. 7.69 lakhs). The Indian market has seen considerable growth in the LCV segment, hence Maruti Suzuki is considering an entry into this segment to enhance their market share. The new LCV is most likely to be manufactured in the upcoming Gujarat plant. It is expected to be introduced in our country with CNG and diesel engine options, competing with the Tata Ace and Mahindra Maxximo.
