Toyota has unveiled the 11th generation Corolla for the European market, which is a much sober version of the sporty looking U.S. version. The new Corolla has grown bigger in dimensions, which adds to a roomier interior cabin. It is 80 mm longer, 15 mm wider and 5 mm lower than the previous version with a 100 mm longer wheelbase. Toyota is offering one diesel engine and four petrol engines on the new Corolla for the European market.
The 1.4-litre D-4D turbodiesel motor produces 89 HP of power and 205 Nm of torque, mated to a 6-speed manual transmission with an option of a 6-speed MultiMode transmission with start/stop technology. This engine returns a claimed fuel economy of 26.31 km/l. The entry-level petrol engine for the Corolla is the 1.33-litre Dual VVT-i unit, which produces 98 HP of power and 128 Nm of torque, mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. This engine returns a mileage of 17.85 km/l.
The next petrol engine option under the hood is a 1.6-litre Dual VVT-i motor, which produces 120 HP of power and 154 Nm of torque, mated to an option of a 6-speed manual gearbox or a Multidrive S CVT automatic transmission. It returns a mileage of 15 km/l. Then there’s the 1.6-litre Valvematic petrol engine producing 130 HP of power and 160 Nm of torque, mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. Average fuel economy for this engine comes to 16.66 km/l.
The range topping petrol engine on the new Corolla is the 1.8-litre Dual VVT-I developing 138 HP of power and 173 Nm of torque, mated to a Multidrive S automatic transmission as standard. This engine returns a fuel consumption of 15.60 km/l. The new Corolla is available in three trim levels – Live, Active and Lounge. It is equipped with high-tech features such as Smart Entry & Start system, dual-zone air conditioning, Simple Intelligent Park Assist (SIPA) system and the Toyota Touch 2 multimedia system. Toyota will launch the all new Corolla in India in 2014, pricing is slightly more than the current generation model.
