The Volkswagen Beetle is an iconic vehicle that needs no introduction at all. The original Beetle was sold between 1938-2003 after which the second generation Beetle came and VW sold that model for ten years and now it’s time for the third generation Beetle which was showcased at the 2012 Auto Expo but did not make it to this year’s motor show. When we asked Mr. Mahesh Kodumudi (Volkswagen India President & MD) about the new Beetle, he clearly stated that the model will be re-introduced in India via the CBU route. Expect prices to be around Rs. 30 lakhs.

While there are quite a few examples of the vintage first generation Beetle restored by enthusiasts in India, the second generation found few takers owing to the high prices and also since the Beetle caters to a niche segment. The third generation model is simply known as the New Beetle and comes with features like keyless entry and push-button start, 17-inch Turbine alloy wheels and bi-xenon headlights. 19-inch alloys are offered as optional extras in other markets.

The interiors of the 2014 Volkswagen Beetle come with a multi-function steering wheel, colour-matched dashboard wherein the colour of the dashboard is the same as the exteriors, ambient lighting, Kaferfach glovebox, touchscreen audio system with Bluetooth and navigation, nine Fender speakers including a subwoofer and Volkswagen Car-Net features. The New Beetle is powered by a 2.5-litre, 5-cylinder engine making 170 HP of power. This diesel engine is mated to a 6-speed DSG transmission.

Volkswagen also offers a sports suspension with the Beetle that helps improve handling dynamics. The vehicle comes with an electromechanical power steering that powers on only when the vehicle is turning and hence it aids in improving the overall fuel efficiency. For safety you get four airbags, ABS with HBA (Hydraulic Brake Assist), Intelligent crash Response System, Electronic Stability Control and a crash-optimized front end. While Volkswagen has added the latest technology to the New Beetle, the company has still managed to keep the looks inspired by the original model.
