Bajaj Pulsar 200 NS FI Spy Shot

Recent reports by Indonesian website iwanbanarian.com suggest that Bajaj is working on a fuel injected version of the flagship Pulsar 200 NS for the Indonesian market in a bid to resurrect the sales of the bike in the country. The Bajaj Pulsar 200 NS sold in Indonesia is same as the Indian version; however the bike does not garner the same acclaim and sales like in India. Other manufacturers in the 200cc segment offer fuel injected models and the updated Pulsar 200 NS with FI is most likely to offer better competition in the segment.

The current Bajaj Pulsar 200 NS is powered by a 200cc single-cylinder; triple-spark, liquid-cooled engine that makes 23.5 BHP of power and 18.3 Nm of torque, mated to a 6-speed transmission. With the new fuel injection technology replacing the older carburetors; not only will the 200 NS be more powerful, it will also be more fuel efficient as well. We expect Bajaj to add FI technology without tinkering much with the current engine layout. The addition of FI technology will also see a marginal increase in the prices of the 200 NS.

This is the Pulsar’s second innings with fuel injection technology. Bajaj had launched the Pulsar 220 with FI (DTS-Fi) back in 2008. However, the FI was too expensive then and was ditched for a carburettor as buyers wanted performance on a budget. The FI systems though are less expensive now, offering more power and efficiency. If the Pulsar 200 NS FI version does get a green signal for the Indian market as well, expect the upcoming Pulsar 200 SS (Full Faired) version to also sport the new FI system. The 200 NS FI will be competing head on against the Yamaha R15 and the Hero Karizma ZMR in the segment, both of which also feature FI systems.

Last week, German auto component manufacturer Bosch announced its entry into the two-wheeler component market with the launch of fuel injection systems for motorcycles. The company stated that the new FI systems are similarly priced as standard carburettors and will replace carbureted engines in motorcycles eventually. It is not clear though whether Bajaj is sourcing the FI unit from Bosch.
