Ford has finally started selling the 2015 Mustang fastback in the US. The sixth generation Mustang is being offered at a starting price of $24,425 for the base model. Ford has updated the current generation Mustang by adding several new features and improvising on other components over the fifth generation Mustang. The muscle car carries a huge fan following throughout the globe and it is a driver’s delight.
The 2015 Ford Mustang is available with three engine options – 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine producing more than 305 HP of power and 406 Nm of torque, 5.0-litre V8 unit churning out more than 420 HP of power and 528 Nm of torque and a 3.7-litre V6 engine producing more than 300 HP of power and 366 Nm of torque. Ford has not revealed the exact power and torque figures for all the three engines. These engines are mated to either a 6-speed MT or a 6-speed AT with paddle shifters. The base variant of the 2015 Mustang comes with a 3.7-litre V6 powerplant.
The 2015 Ford Mustang comes with a host of goodies like fully independent front and rear suspension, eight airbags including front, knee and side-impact protection for driver and front passenger, individual TPMS, rear-view camera system, high-intensity discharge headlamps with signature lighting, illuminated and locking glove box, leather-wrapped steering wheel with manual tilt and telescope adjustment, Intelligent Access – enabling the driver to enter without touching the key fob, push-button start, SYNC connectivity system with next-generation AppLink to control smartphone apps with voice commands, 4.2-inch colour screen and two USB ports.
Ford is also introducing a 50-years ‘appearance package’ for buyers of the Mustang EcoBoost Premium and Mustang GT Premium models. This package comes with a chrome grille, round 50-years emblem, 255/40/R19 all-season tyres with alloys, anniversary floor mats and unique upholstery stitching.
The 2015 Ford Mustang costs $24,425 which translates to Rs. 14.36 lakhs according to the current exchange rates. Now if Ford decides to bring down the Mustang to India via the CBU route, then it would attract a duty of approximately 170%* over and above the base price. So, after adding the duties and taxes of approximately, Rs. 24.42 lakhs over the base price of Rs. 14.36 lakhs, the ex-showroom price of the Ford Mustang in India will be around Rs. 39 lakhs. Now adding Ford India’s profit, dealer margin, RTO charges and insurance costs to this price, we conclude that the muscle car will cost a minimum of Rs. 50 lakhs (on-road) for the base variant.
Heck, even after paying so much it is still a great vehicle to own and very different than the Audi A4, BMW 3-Series and Mercedes C-Class that you get for this price. Even India has many Mustang lovers so Ford should really give it a shot by introducing the vehicle here.
* A CBU car like the Ford Mustang attracts an import duty of 125%, Landing Charges of 1%, Countervailing Duty of 30%, CESS of 3% and Additional Countervailing Duty of 4%.
