SsangYong Rexton W Test Drive Review

Mahindra has launched a new variant of the SsangYong Rexton called ‘RX6’ with a manual transmission that sits between the RX7 and the RX5 variants in the SUV’s line-up. The RX6 packs in a host of features from the top-end RX7 variant, while offering the mechanicals from the RX5 variant in order to compete with the likes of the Hyundai Santa Fe and Mitsubishi Pajero Sport in the segment. The RX6 gets a manual transmission, which Mahindra says is targeted at 4×4 driving enthusiasts, being incorporated after taking feedback from customers.

In terms of styling, the SsangYong Rexton RX6 does not sport any exterior upgrades and continues with the same body shell. The interiors though have been spruced up for a more luxurious appeal. The cabin gets new premium black leather upholstery, dual-tone black and beige interiors, 8-way electrically adjustable driver’s seat and automatic easy access function for the driver’s seat. Creature comforts on the Rexton RX6 comprise of electronic sunroof with tilt-open function and sun blind, infotainment system with navigation, speed sensitive power steering, memory function with three presets, automatic headlamps and rain sensing wipers.

Powering the Rexton RX6 variant is a 2.7-litre RX270 XDi, 5-cylinder, common-rail, turbo-diesel engine that produces 162 BHP of power and 340 Nm of torque, mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. The RX6 variant also gets 4×4 Torque-on-Demand system with a low ratio switch. In terms of safety, the RX6 variant gets ABS, ESP, Anti–Slip Regulation (ASR), active rollover protection, hill descent control as well as front and side airbags are part of standard kit.

Mahindra also conveyed that the SsangYong Rexton was the second most selling SUV in its class in the last financial year (2013-14) and the new variant will surely help the company keep the momentum going. The Rexton RX6 variant has been priced at Rs. 19.96 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi) and is available in four colours namely white, black, silver and purple. The RX6 will be assembled at Mahindra’s Chakan plant in Pune.
