Tata Zest Front View

Tata Motors is knocking on every door, turning every page and certainly is leaving no stone unturned to make sure that the Zest compact sedan is a success. A major new product from the Indian automaker, the Zest is a compelling package and will determine the direction of the company’s future. Tata will be launching the Zest in a whole lot of variants inclusive of petrol and diesel engine options as well as a manual and AMT gearbox options. Now reports suggest that the automaker will offer a lesser powered 75 PS motor as a base diesel variant on the Zest as well.

The Tata Zest diesel is powered the 1.3-litre QuadraJet engine that produces 90 PS of power at 4000 RPM and 200 Nm of torque at 1750 RPM. However, the entry level variant will comes with a detuned version of this engine producing 75 PS of power at 4000 RPM and 190 Nm of torque at 1750 RPM, courtesy of the fixed geometry turbo instead of a Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT) found on the higher variants. The base variant will also be skimped off several features like the Harman infotainment system, ABS, airbags and alloy wheels that are available as standard on the top-end variants of the Zest.

Most obviously, the idea is to save costs and price the base variant more effectively for a mouth watering starting price. Even though the Zest is being advertised as fun to drive and a powerful vehicle, Tata wants to cater to buyers looking for a value for money proposition as well. For those who give less importance to power outputs over cabin space and comfort will be the primary buyers for this variant. Moreover, buyers looking for a sedan feel on a budget won’t be disappointed as well.

The 1.3-litre QuadraJet engine in the 75 PS guise, will also power the Bolt hatchback that is set to launch by the end of this year. Replacing the Manza and Vista models in Tata Motors’ line-up, the Zest and Bolt sport similar equipment levels on the inside and share the same powerplants as well.
