2014 Volkswagen Polo Facelift Front

While the exteriors of the 2014 Volkswagen Polo facelift have received mild revisions compared to the outgoing model, the main change comes under the hood with the inclusion of the new 1.5-litre diesel engine replacing the 1.2-litre and 1.6-litre units. Before the launch, scheduled for the facelift model on 15th July, the complete engine specifications of the new 1.5-litre diesel unit as well as the 1.2-litre petrol unit have been leaked online that will power the the regular Polo as well as the GT models.

2014 Volkswagen Polo 1.5 TDI

Engine – 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder
Power – 90 PS @ 4200 RPM
Torque – 230 Nm @ 1500-2500 RPM

2014 Volkswagen Polo GT TDI

Engine – 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder
Power – 105 PS @ 4400 RPM
Torque – 250 Nm @ 1500-2500 RPM

The 1.5-litre unit replaces the 1.2-litre 3-cylinder TDI engine that produced 75 PS and 180 Nm of torque and comes as a major upgrade to the noisy and boring TDI motor. The leaked document states that the new engine gets a Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT) offering lower emissions, flat torque curve, super acceleration and ‘outstanding power efficiency’. The same specifications will also be found in the Cross Polo. On the GT TDI version though, the same engine has been given a power upgrade and produces 105 PS of power and 250 Nm of torque. Both the models are expected to come paired to a 5-speed manual transmission.

2014 Volkswagen Polo 1.2 MPI

Engine – 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder
Power – 75 PS @ 5400 RPM
Torque – 110 Nm @ 3750 RPM

2014 Volkswagen Polo GT TSI

Engine – 1.2-litre, 4-cylinder
Power – 105 PS @ 5000 RPM
Torque – 175 Nm @ 1500 RPM

The powertrain on the Polo petrol remains unchanged and continues with the same 1.2-litre 3-cylinder unit that produces 75 PS of power, paired to a 5-speed manual transmission. The Polo GT on the other hand continues with the 1.2-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged motor producing 105 PS, mated to a 7-speed DSG with tiptronic transmission. The GT version continues to get ABS, ESP, HHC (Hill Hold Control) and aluminium pedals.

The 1.5-litre diesel engine is very crucial for Volkswagen India as the motor will also power the updated Vento in the future in the 105 PS guise. Another benefit will be the price reduction on the Polo GT TDI, with the facelifted model qualifying as a sub 4-metre vehicle and will attract an excise duty of 8 percent. The automaker has commenced dealer and service training of the Polo facelift before the launch on 15th July, while the GT variants will be refreshed in August this year.
