2014 Volvo XC90

Volvo Cars has revealed the engine line-up of the next generation XC90 SUV that will be unveiled next month. Described as the most powerful and cleanest SUV by Volvo, the 2015 XC90 will be offered in a range of engine options along with a plug-in hybrid version that will make the SUV the most powerful as well as the cleanest ever on roads. The 2015 XC90 offers a range of 4-cylinder Drive-E engine options that Volvo claims to offer an impeccable combination of power and fuel efficiency, while emitting low CO2 gases.

The top of the line 2015 Volvo XC90 will come with the new Twin engine wearing a ‘T8’ badge and will be a plug-in hybrid version. The 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged engine will power the front wheels, while an 80 HP electric motor will drive the rear axle. The combined output stands at 400 BHP of power and 640 Nm of torque from both the motors. As the company states, the engine uses a supercharger to fill in the bottom-end of the power range for that naturally aspirated feel, while the turbocharger kicks in when the airflow builds up.

Based on the new Scalable Architecture Platform (SPA), the new XC90 will be far lighter than its predecessor and the company also confirmed that there has been no compromise on interior or luggage space to accommodate the electric powertrain. The chassis was originally designed to accommodate the battery pack for a plug-in hybrid version in the future. The NEDC (New European Driving Cycle) has rated the CO2 emission at only 60 g/km, almost one-fourth of what its competitors emit, making the 2015 XC90 the most powerful and cleanest SUV produced. The 2015 XC90 will be able to travel up to 40 kms on electric power alone.

The other engines that have been confirmed for the 2015 XC90 include the D5 twin turbo diesel engine that produces 225 HP and 470 Nm of torque, while the fuel consumption is rated at 16.6 km/l. There is also the D4 turbo diesel engine on offer that produces 190 HP and 400 Nm of torque and delivers a fuel economy of 20 km/l. The Volvo XC90 will also come with two petrol engines on offer. Firstly, the T6 turbo engine with a supercharger and a turbo that produces 320 HP and 400 Nm of torque, while the second engine would be the T5 producing 254 HP and 350 Nm of torque.

Volvo had earlier revealed the spell bound interiors of the all new XC90 and now the new and powerful powertrain has made the SUV quite promising. The SUV is expected to be revealed in August, while the public debut will be held at the 2014 Paris Motor Show scheduled in October. Rivaling the Mercedes GL-Class and the Audi Q7 in the segment, the Volvo XC90 is expected to be launched in India by mid-2015.
