After months of speculations, spy shots and teaser images, Yamaha has finally unveiled the 2015 YZF-R1 superbike at the ongoing EICMA Show in Milan. Taking inspiration from the YZR-M1 superbike, the new R1 resembles the MotoGP spec superbike to a large extent, which has also been extended to the engine as well as other components on the bike. Debuting in two versions, Yamaha also unveiled the 2015 R1 M performance bred race spec limited edition version sporting a host of electronic goodies to keep the super sports bike planted on track.

A completely new model over its predecessor, the 2015 Yamaha R1 uses a lightweight asymmetric Deltabox frame, while power comes from a compact new 998cc 4-stroke, in-line 4-cylinder crossplane engine with a newly designed crankshaft, 10.5-litre airbox, 2-directional fuel injector and an assistant slipper clutch. The engine is tuned to produce 200 HP of power and 112 Nm of torque, while the weight is just 199 kgs (wet). The bike is paired to a constant mesh 6-speed transmission and performance is super exciting. The short wheelbase adds to improved riding dynamics and the bike comes with an aluminium fuel tank and cast magnesium alloy wheels.

In addition, suspension duties are performed by 43 mm front forks and a Truss type swingarm rear suspension, while braking duties are carried by the unified brake system. Heavily inspired from the M1, the 2015 R1 gets LED headlights at the front as well as a central forced air intake. The bike also gets a new side mounted titanium exhaust, replacing the under seat unit on the outgoing model. Calling it the future, Yamaha has loaded the R1 with a number of electronic aids and goodies that have been trickled down from the cutting edge technology used in MotoGP.

The 2015 Yamaha R1 is the first ever street legal bike to feature a 6-axis Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) with Gyro and G sensors that allows the riders to experience 3D Motion detection. The superbike comes loaded with Yamaha Ride Control that allows Traction Control, Slide Control, Front Lift Control, Quickshifter, Launch Control, ABS and a Unified Brake system as standard. The superbike also gets a completely customisable TFT LCD instrument panel screen.

Coming to the more powerful and track only Yamaha R1 M, the supersports bike comes with an electronic adjustable racing suspension with ohlins forks, telemetry in the seat, full carbon fairing and front fender and communication control. The R1 M also comes with a data logging system with integrated GPS that allows rider data to be uploaded via an Android app. Yamaha has also added specially developed Bridgestone tyres for the R1 M along with lighter alloy wheels. Even though the pricing has not been announced, the R1 M will be available for the exclusive few with limited production, while the R1 will go on sale across Europe from next year.
