The 2016 BMW 1-Series will be underpinned by the newly developed UKL platform that also underpins the current generation MINI.

The 2016 BMW 1-Series will be rivalling the Mercedes CLA and Audi A3 globally

BMW’s answer to the Audi A3 and Mercedes CLA was recently caught testing in China for the first time and is none other than the 1-Series sedan. Codenamed F52, the 2016 BMW 1-Series prototype was fully covered in camouflage and was spotted with pre-production components. To launch next year, the new 1-Series will be the most affordable sedan to come from the Bavarian manufacturer and will finally help the company regain its lost glory against its German compatriots.

As recent online reports suggest, the 2016 BMW 1-Series will be based on the UKL1 platform that also underpins the new generation MINI models and is a front-wheel drive layout. The sedan will be sharing its powertrain with the recently facelifted 1-Series hatchback that include new 3-cylinder petrol and diesel engines; whereas the styling too will be taken over from the hatchback version for the front fascia with the rear taking inspiration from the 3-Series sedan.

The new BMW 1-Series sedan, however, will not be a new generation model and will be launched as a MY2016 vehicle instead. The automaker has been mum about the developments of its most affordable sedan and it is believed that the new model will be making its debut at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA) this September with a corresponding launch in 2016.

Given the popularity of premium compact sedans in India, it is given that BMW will be bringing the 1-Series sedan to compete with the other Germans in the segment. While Mercedes and Audi have tasted success in 2014, BMW has been witnessing stagnancy in sales and the new premium compact sedan will surely help the brand capture a sizeable market share in the future. In a recent statement, the automaker did promise to launch 15 new models in India this year, starting with the i8 hybrid supercar that will hit the market later this month.
