The 2015 Jazz is fun to drive and goes easy on the pocket with petrol & diesel engines

It is certainly getting more and more difficult to keep a tab on the most fuel efficient vehicles in India, which is a good thing. With automakers pursuing to outweigh each other returning more kilometres per litre, it is the customer that gets it easy without burning too much of his money during the ownership period. Over the past year, Maruti Suzuki worked really hard, made some amends to its engines and even introduced a new twin-cylinder diesel motor in order to achieve the highest fuel efficiency figures. However, after silently lurking around for some time, Honda has quietly slipped up to the second position with the all-new Jazz that returns an ARAI certified figure of 27.3 km/l.

The 2015 Honda Jazz misses out on the ‘most fuel efficient vehicle in India’ title by a whisker, as the Maruti Celerio returns an ARAI certified 27.62 km/l. The DZire that was briefly the most fuel efficient vehicle earlier this year is now reduced to the third spot returning a figure of 26.59 km/l, while the Ciaz is pushed to the fourth position with an ARAI figure of 26.3 km/l. The India-specific 1.5-litre i-DTEC diesel is the strong point for the Jazz that produces 100 PS and 200 Nm of torque and comes paired to a 6-speed manual gearbox. The longer ratios on the 6-speed unit help the hatch in achieving the high fuel efficiency figure.

Maruti Suzuki, we are sure, has certainly received a jolt considering its optimism for having the most fuel efficient vehicles and will surely increase its efforts for the YRA premium hatchback scheduled for launch later this year. The new generation Jazz has a lot of features going for it right from space, onboard tech and fuel economy. It now solely depends on how Honda positions the car in terms of pricing, which if done right will certainly help the automaker sell in far more numbers than its previous iteration. Segment best seller? Maybe not!

With a realignment, the top 10 most fuel efficient vehicles’ list comprises of four Maruti cars and three Honda models while the Chevrolet Beat and Ford Fiesta bring in the element of surprise. No petrol car features on the list for obvious reasons.
