The new Avenger is likely to get a 200cc engine replacing the current 220cc unit

With speculations rife of the Avenger going under the knife very soon, Rajiv Bajaj, MD and CEO at Bajaj Auto, has now confirmed that its entry-level cruiser will soon see a major upgrade and will be launched during the third quarter of the current financial year. The Avenger is one of the more successful and consistently performing products for the Pune based automaker and was long due for an update.

While Bajaj has not revealed details on the updated Avenger yet, it is believed that the new model will draw power from a 199.5cc liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine that also powers the Pulsar 200 NS and Adventure Sport. The said motor belts out 23.5 PS of power and 18.3 Nm of torque on the Pulsars, paired to a 6-speed gearbox. In contrast, the outgoing Avenger uses a 220cc single-cylinder motor shared with the Pulsar 220F, tuned to produce 19.03 PS and 17.5 Nm of torque, matched to a 5-speed gearbox. Apart from the increment in power, expect to see enhanced refinement on the new Avenger.

In addition, earlier reports also suggested that the updated Bajaj Avenger will get a rear disc brake to compliment the new powertrain that will enhance the stopping power by a significant margin. Other mechanical bits are likely to be the same with telescopic front forks and hydraulic shock absorbers at the rear. In terms of design, we don’t expect Bajaj to play too much with the Avenger’s existing design language, even though some improvements are always appreciated.

The Bajaj Avenger has been an apt choice for cruiser lovers in the entry-level segment, who specifically do not want a Royal Enfield. The bike’s quintessential cruiser looks and proven mechanicals have been its selling point over the years as Bajaj easily sells the bike without much effort. For FY2015, the automaker sold 44,000 units throughout the year posting a growth of 9.4 percent, which is expected to grow even further once the updated model hits the streets between the October-December period this year.
