Mahindra has registered a domain for the XUV100 that will be the production name for the S101 compact SUV, the automaker’s second compact SUV and also its second monocoque product after the XUV500.

The Mahindra XUV100 is targeted at an urban audience differentiating it from TUV300

Mahindra’s intensive testing this year has included two compact SUVs that will finally give the Indian auto giant a much needed push in the segment after the Quanto failed miserably. While the first compact SUV has been christened as the TUV300 and will be going on sale tomorrow, the other model codenamed S101 has been dubbed as  the ‘XUV100’ (called as XUV One double oh!). Confirming the same is the new domain name registered by Mahindra that goes wwww.mahindraxuv101.com.

Mahindra first used the alphanumeric naming strategy on the XUV500; its first global product and has now adopted the same for the two new compact SUVs as well. While the TUV300 is a rugged, utilitarian tough looking product based a ladder-on-frame chassis with flat body panels, the XUV100 will have more of an urban approach with a curvaceous design language giving it a more hatchback like appearance and will also compete with the same in terms of pricing. What also makes the XUV100 different is the fact it will be the second product from Mahindra to be based on a monocoque platform after the XUV500, which could also be the reason behind the XUV tag.

In terms of power, the Mahindra XUV100 will be using a newly developed 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine under the hood while the mHawk 80 diesel motor powering the TUV300 could also do duty here. Both the manual and automatic transmission options are likely to be on offer with the latter being an AMT unit sending power to front wheels. Inside the cabin, the XUV100 will come with a multi-function steering wheel, 2-DIN audio system, dashboard mounted gearshift knob and possibly climate control on top variants.

We also expect to see some decent safety tech making it to the Mahindra XUV100 with dual front airbags and ABS being offered on lower variants as well. For now, the automaker will be concentrating on introducing the TUV300 in the country, whereas the XUV100 can be expected by the end of this calendar year.
