Maruti seems to be on a roll this year. The company launched the Baleno at an attractive price, will soon start offering safety packs on its vehicles and will also start offering its hot-selling hatchback Wagon R with an AMT gearbox. The Wagon R is an extremely practical hatchback and comes with low running and maintenance costs which explains the reason for its high sales. Now, the market has been demanding automatic gearboxes since quite some time and Maruti really wants to tap the market.

The AMT unit on the Wagon R will be the same 5-speed unit that is produced by Magneti Marelli. This gearbox is also available on other Maruti vehicles like the Celerio and Alto K10. The Tata Zest also benefits from the same transmission. Other mechanicals on the Wagon R will remain the same and it will continue to be powered by the same 1.0-litre K-Series engine that produces 67 HP of power and 90 Nm of torque.

The updated Wagon R will have no cosmetic changes but it will get an Auto GearShift badge just like its siblings. The AMT gearbox will be offered in both LXi and VXi trims. Dispatches for the AMT variants will begin in November which indicates that the launch is very near. We can expect the prices for AMT variants to be higher by Rs. 25,000/- as compared to their respective manual variants. The hatchback is priced between Rs. 3.71-4.69 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi).

The Wagon R is also offered with a CNG kit that makes it even more cheaper to run. The availability of the AMT gearbox will attract more buyers who are fed up of driving manual cars in our ever increasing traffic and desire to experience the convenience that an automatic gearbox offers at a cost that is much lesser than a conventional automatic transmission.
