India’s favorite MPV, the Toyota Innova is all set to get a second-generation model called the Innova Crysta which is expected to be launched by mid 2016 while it is already available in Indonesia. Such an Indonesian model was tested by NCAP for Southeast Asian countries and it scored a 4-star rating for overall safety.

Only the vehicles with Electronic Stability Control (ESC) as standard qualify for a 5-star rating while the new Toyota Innova Crysta offers this feature in the higher trims only and hence the entry-level model scored a 4-star rating in Adult Occupant Protection while the ESC equipped model scored 14.10 points out of 16 and a 5-star rating.

The Toyota Innova Crysta was marked at 76 percent for Child Occupant Protection which is very good for a 4-star rated vehicle. The Indian variant will feature dual front airbags, EBD, ABS, Brake Assist, ISOFIX mounts and seat belt reminder as standard on all the variants while the higher variants will get additional features such as ESC, side airbags, etc.

The tested Toyota Innova Crysta was powered by a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine that produces 139 PS of power and 183 Nm of torque. This motor can be used in India if the ban on diesel cars with displacement above 2000cc in New Delhi gets extended or expands to other cities in the country. The same motor powers the models sold in Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines, Malaysia and Vietnam.

The Indian spec Toyota Innova Crysta is expected to be powered by a 2.4-litre GD diesel engine that produces 149 PS of power and 342 Nm of torque, mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox while the 6-speed automatic variant will produce 360 Nm of torque. No official announcement about the powertrains is made yet.

The top-end variant of the Toyota Innova Crysta was showcased at the 2016 Auto Expo and the MPV boasts of a number of features such as smart entry with start/stop button for ignition, cruise control, seven airbags, 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with satellite navigation, auto close for tailgate and many more.
