Production of the Yamaha RX 135 was stopped in 2005, however, one dealer in Bangalore just auctioned 7 units of the two-stroke motorcycle, highly popular among bike enthusiasts and street racers.

Yamaha RX135 Ownership Review
Yamaha RX135 was sold by a Bangalore dealer who retained 7 units of the bike for 10 years

Manufacturing of the Yamaha RX 135 was stopped in 2005, when the central government enforced stricter rules. Two-stroke two-wheelers failed to stick to the newly-formed rules forcing companies to stop their production. The Yamaha RX 135 could be more clearly seen as a bigger version of the RX 100, which was a superstar of its time. The RX 135 had minor changes, producing more power and having more gears than the RX 100. The only major difference was the name badge which displayed that whether it’s a 100 or a 135.

A Bangalore dealer Rahul S Dhojanna who had bought 7 new bikes faced a huge problem. His passion for racing was the reason why the dealer retained 7 new bikes for his team. But as the racing scene in the city faced hindrance because of complaints being registered against bikers and police beginning to act against them, the dealer was left with no option but to keep these bikes unused in his warehouse. In 2013, he planned to sell off these bikes, but the road transport office had stopped registering new two-stroke bikes and to get them registered he had to approach the court. It took Mr. Dhojanna over two years to gain the necessary permission for registration.

Then finally, one of his friends posted on facebook about the availability of seven RX 135s and within hours the post went viral. The number of people showing a positive response went so high that they had to pull down the post from his facebook page. Interested customers were then informed of the auction. Surprisingly each bike sold for around Rs. 1.5 lakh with the highest bid going to around Rs. 1.65 lakh. That proved without any doubt that bike enthusiasts still love the RX 135.

Having seen production from 1997-2005, the Yamaha RX 135 in its glory days was a dream come true for any bike enthusiast. It developed around 14 BHP of power, returned around 30-40 km/l of mileage and costed around Rs. 48,000/- (on-road). Also the motorcycle’s easy to repair nature and the reliability and prestige associated with the brand name, ensured high sales of this bike. The Yamaha RX 135 was released around the end of the 1990s in select India cities, you could get a factory-shipped RX 135 until August 2005. There were two versions of this bike sold in India – the 4-speed and 5-speed.
