When it comes to sedans, or rather luxury sedans, one wouldn’t think of a Hyundai car even in the top 5. That mindset is exactly what Hyundai Motor India would want to change with the new Genesis.

Hyundai Genesis Front Spied
The Hyundai Genesis will be the Korean carmaker’s flagship offering in India

Up until recently, the Hyundai Sonata was the Korean carmaker’s flagship sedan, but it failed to generate the numbers that Hyundai would have hoped for. The baton was then passed on to the Hyundai Elantra, which is a D-segment sedan. Well, it seems that Hyundai wants to take the competition to the next level with their top of the line luxury sedan, the Genesis.

The Hyundai Genesis was teased multiple times in India, first at the 2014 Autocar Performance Show and more recently at the Auto Expo 2016. However, it’s not the first time that the car has been spotted on our roads, it has also been spied in Delhi and the other metros of the country as well. If Hyundai’s survey for Genesis in India comes out to be positive, we would be looking at a launch within the next year or so.

This news is sure to ring some bells in the rival camps of Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi and the likes as the Hyundai Genesis promises to be a complete package of performance, luxury and premium features. As and when the Genesis does launch, it will go up against the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, the BMW 5-Series and the Audi A6, which are the current favourites for almost all buyers in the segment. It will indeed be a tough task for Hyundai to establish the Genesis brand, as most people hold a perception of Hyundai being a budget, mass market car manufacturer.

To begin with, the variant of the Genesis that was showcased at the Auto Expo is powered by a 3.8 litre, V6 petrol engine that makes 311 BHP of power at 6000 RPM and 397 Nm of torque at 5000 RPM. Apart from the powerful engine, the Hyundai Genesis also gets a power tilt-and-slide panoramic sunroof, a rake and reach adjustable steering wheel, auto-dimming wing mirrors, a Lexicon 14-speaker sound system, ventilated front seats, power rear sunshade and manual rear side shades, LED fog lights. It also gets a host of safety features such as blind spot detection, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, automatic emergency braking and high-beam assist. Now this a good enough package to give the rest of the competition a run for their money, provided Hyundai manages to get the pricing right as well as have a convenient after sales network.
