Downsizing is the name of the game in the current market scenario where automotive companies are stumbling upon each other to offer tailor-made products for emerging markets, in order to add more numbers to their sales charts. Thus we see the advent of cars like the Mercedes CLA and Audi A3 which are fighting to garner the entry-level sedan market. Now BMW has also plunged into the same pool and introduced the 1-Series Sedan for the Chinese market.

BMW has finally taken the wraps off the much awaited 1-Series Sedan, built specifically for the Chinese market. The car is based on the UKL front-wheel drive platform which also underpins the third-generation MINI Hardtop, the new X1, and the BMW 2-Series Active Tourer. Expect the smallest sedan from the Bavarian company, which is solely produced and specifically sold in China, to offer loads of rear seat space as the Chinese give very high priority to the rear bench. The first compact sports sedan from the German automaker will be sold by BMW Brilliance Automotive in China.

The vehicle was first showcased as the BMW Concept Compact Sedan at the 2015 Guanghzou Motor Show. The 1-Series follows the same familiar design language where the traditional BMW kidney grille is flanked by dual LED headlamps and followed by a V-shaped air dam grille at the bottom. The sporty bumper with gloss black colouring for several elements add some praiseworthy aggression to the small sedan. The development and testing of the new car took place at the BMW headquarters with the involvement of Chinese engineers.

Codenamed as the F52, the 1-Series is the first sedan in BMW history to ride on a front-wheel-drive platform. The 1-Series Sedan will probably be offered with three and four cylinder petrol and diesel engines with displacements ranging from 1.5 to 2.0-litres, while mated with a 6-speed manual or an 8-speed Steptronic automatic transmission. There is no news of the car being brought to India as of now but the vehicle could become popular here.
