BMW Motorrad and Alpinestars say they have been working on the technology since 2001. The jacket will offer protection to both male and female riders.

BMW Alpinestars Airbag Jacket Style
The Alpinestars airbag jacket is independent of the bike and can be used on any motorcycle

One of the worst aspects of 2-wheelers is the unhindered exposure to elements, which in case of some misfortune is almost always fatal, especially in a country like India where traffic safety rules are considered as inconvenient jokes. Thus when innovations like the new Alpinestars Tech-Air, which has an in-built airbag system is brought in the market, it definitely makes you stand up and take notice. It also has the help of BMW Motorrad’s marketing might to make it more effective.

Alpinestars has now introduced a jacket with an in-built airbag system specially made for BMW Motorrad riders. Named Tech-Air, this new jacket is aimed to provide more upper body protection to bike riders using traditional airbags just like in cars. Both the companies have jointly developed this safety jacket, which even has BMW branding on it. The BMW-Alpinestars Tech-Air jacket will start retailing from October 2016.

The jacket is made-up of a liner vest that has an integrated circuit for the airbag system. All sensors are mounted inside the jacket itself, thus making it independent of the bike. Therefore, the owner can use the jacket on any bike he wants. The sensors work continuously using a set logic algorithm to determine if the vehicle has had a crash. Interestingly, Alpinestars has been working on this technology since 2001.

Upon detecting a sudden impact, a layer of airbags will be deployed within the jacket that will protect vital parts of the rider’s body, including chest, back, kidneys, and shoulders. This jacket is the first safety product to be launched under an exclusive agreement between BMW Motorrad and Alpinestars and is available for both female and male customers in different colours from October 2016. The bike works for both on-road and off-road use.
