The SHVS models get subsidies from government’s FAME scheme

Maruti Suzuki has crossed the 1 lakh unit sales mark for its SHVS models. The mild-hybrid tech has been available in the Ciaz and Ertiga since Q4 2015 and the company claims that the the SHVS-equipped variants make up for 60-65% of the total sales of the two cars.

The SHVS system makes use of an Integrated Starter Generator (ISG) in place of a conventional alternator and an Exide-sourced battery to store and use the energy generated by the car during deceleration and braking. This energy is used to restart the engine when the driver is using the auto start/stop function and also power the car when it needs extra torque for instant acceleration or when driving on an incline road.

Consequently, this reduces the load on the engine, enabling for better fuel economy, without adding too much weight to the car (only 10 kgs in case of the Ciaz). The Ciaz SHVS returns a claimed 28.08 km/l and the Ertiga has a claimed mileage of nearly 25 km/l. In both the cars, the SHVS technology works with a 1.3-litre diesel engine that produces 89 HP of power at 4000 RPM and 200 Nm of torque at 1750 RPM.
