Daihatsu will offer cars in small hatchbacks and entry level SUV/MUV segments

It is a known fact that Toyota is looking to bring the Daihatsu brand to India to offer products in the entry-level mass market segments. The automaker is really looking to expand in the small car market in India. The Etios and Etios Liva have been selling since quite a while but the cars haven’t created much of a mark in that segment.

The new small cars for India will be developed by Daihatsu to keep costs in check. Toyota is looking to target the entry level hatchback segment as well as the compact SUV and MUV segments. However, the cars will be launched by 2020 only, when the BS VI norms are implemented in India.

Toyota has briefed the R&D team that the new small car should be value for money and also the safest. The car also needs to have a pure hybrid solution. Thus, the car will be cost efficient, safe as well as will have low running costs. The company isn’t aiming for volumes, but wants to make a nice car to give competition to Hyundai and Maruti Suzuki who are currently leading the market.

Apart from this, Toyota will also be launching the Corolla hybrid in India in the next 12-18 months. The company knows that hybrids are the future. After that, the company will introduce hybrid technology in some of their other cars too, including smaller offerings.
