PSA Group recently announced their plans for arrival in the Indian market. The company, partnered with the CK Birla Group, is aiming to roll out its first car over here by 2020. Peugeot had entered India way back in the 90s with Premier Automobiles but didn’t take off while their second failed attempt to enter India took place in 2011.

This time around, the market has completely evolved and the automaker seems to have chosen just the right time to enter our market. PSA has laid out a new Smart Car Strategy wherein they will be producing cars specifically meant for the Indian market. The three models will be – Smart Car 1 (premium hatchback with SUV-styling), Smart Car 2 (compact SUV) and Smart Car 3 (mid-size sedan).

The premium hatchback will compete with the likes of the Maruti Swift while the compact SUV will compete with the Renault Duster and Hyundai Creta. The mid-size sedan will be slotted in the C-segment, rivalling the Honda City, Maruti Ciaz and the likes.

The premium hatchback is likely to be launched by 2020 while the compact SUV will come a year later. Another year later, the mid-size sedan will be launched. All the vehicles will be based on the CMP platform which is a modular platform. Peugeot isn’t aiming for the small car segment in India.
