Yamaha has unveiled the 2021 MT-09 with revised styling, bigger and more powerful engine and less weight.
Let us look at the controversial part of the bike first. Gone is the narrow twin-pod headlight unit and in its place sits a single LED light flanked by LED DRLs on either side.
The fuel tank shrouds have been redesigned and at the sides we can see parts usually hidden behind body panels, like ancillaries, now proudly on display.
Getting rid of panels, among other things, has contributed to the 4 kg weight loss as well. Now, the middle-weight bike weighs only 189 kg (wet).
Now to the most important part – the 3-cylinder Euro 5-compliant engine. It is now bigger, displacing 890cc, and makes 119 PS at 10,000 RPM and 93 Nm at 7000 RPM.
While the engine power is up by 4 PS (arriving at the same RPM), in comparison to the earlier 847cc triple, the max torque figure (up from 87.5 Nm) is achieved 1500 RPM earlier than before.
The motor gets a revised fuel injection system (injectors shifted from cylinder head to just after the throttle valve), while there is a new aluminium frame which is 2.3 kg lighter and redesigned swingarm.
At the front, the 41 mm KYB USD forks are also new and come with with compression, preload and rebound damping adjustability. The rear suspension linkage has also been changed and the KYB shock at the back is adjustable too.
Another important revision is with the 17-inch 10-spoke wheels that Yamaha claims are its lightest units. The bike rides on 120-section front and 180-section rear tyres.
Colour options on the 2021 Yamaha MT-09 are three, namely – Icon Blue, Storm Fluo, and Tech Black. Deliveries to European dealers will commence from March 2021.
