Bajaj Prepares Homegrown Electric Motorcycle Architecture Across Segments

Bajaj Dominar 400 front

Bajaj develops a new in-house electric motorcycle platform for future demand

Bajaj Auto is preparing to expand its electric vehicle portfolio with the development of a new, fully in-house electric motorcycle platform. The initiative forms part of a broader research and development drive aimed at addressing multiple categories, ranging from everyday commuter bikes to performance-oriented machines. This marks a significant step in the company’s long-term EV strategy, signalling its intention to participate meaningfully in a segment that is still at a very early stage in India.

During the company’s Q2 FY26 earnings discussion, Bajaj’s leadership outlined the rationale behind the project, noting that demand trends in the electric motorcycle space remain uncertain. Even so, the company believes it is strategically wiser to be prepared for different market outcomes than to risk missing future opportunities. The plan is to draw on Bajaj’s established engineering experience from its internal-combustion motorcycle lineup while also utilising the technical knowledge gained through Chetak Technology Ltd., the arm behind the successful revival of the Chetak electric scooter business.

The development comes at a time when the segment is beginning to attract interest. Rivals such as Royal Enfield have showcased new concepts globally and several startups have begun gaining traction. However, electric motorcycles currently make up less than 1 percent of India’s electric two-wheeler sales, largely due to high battery costs, range limitations and the lack of accessible mid-performance products.

Bajaj sees its new platform as part of a wider EV roadmap that includes expanding the Chetak family, launching new electric three-wheelers and building export-oriented compact EVs. Rather than a shift away from existing strengths, the company views its electric motorcycle programme as a natural progression designed to ensure it remains competitive when the category matures.
