BMW has expanded its performance-oriented portfolio in India with the launch of the BMW M440i Convertible, priced at Rs. 1.09 crore (ex-showroom). The new model enters the niche luxury convertible segment and competes with rivals such as the Mercedes-Benz CLE Cabriolet, which is positioned at a slightly higher price point.
The M440i Convertible draws heavily from the design language of the 4 Series range, featuring a prominent kidney grille that extends into the lower bumper and slim LED headlamps with distinctive daytime running lights. Unlike its predecessor, which used a folding hard-top, the new model adopts a fabric soft-top roof. This roof can be opened or closed in 18 seconds at speeds of up to 50 km/h, enhancing usability in varying driving conditions.
From the side, the convertible rides on 19-inch alloy wheels with a staggered tyre setup, while the rear design incorporates sculpted LED tail-lamps and dual exhaust outlets.
Inside, the M440i Convertible follows a driver-focused layout with a 2+2 seating configuration. The cabin is equipped with a dual-screen setup comprising a 14.9-inch infotainment display and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. A flat-bottom steering wheel and minimalistic dashboard design contribute to its sporty character.
The front seats, shared with the BMW M340i, offer electric adjustment and memory functions. Additional features include a Harman Kardon sound system, head-up display, wireless charging, tyre pressure monitoring and automatic climate control.
Under the hood, the M440i Convertible is powered by BMW’s 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder turbo-petrol engine, producing 374 HP and 500 Nm of torque. This engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and an all-wheel-drive system.
BMW claims a 0-100 km/hr acceleration time of 4.9 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/hr. While slightly slower on paper than the M340i sedan, the convertible still delivers strong performance figures for its segment.
With this launch, BMW continues to cater to enthusiasts seeking a blend of open-top driving and high-performance engineering. The M440i Convertible sits in a relatively niche space in India, where demand for luxury convertibles remains limited but consistent among buyers looking for a distinctive driving experience.
