Euro Spec Suzuki Celerio Scores Only 3 Stars In NCAP Crash Test

The Celerio scored 61 percent in adult occupant protection and 74 percent in child occupant protection but failed to pass the side pole crash test.

The Euro spec Celerio gets dual front side airbags, ABS & ESP as standard

Suzuki is all set to launch the Celerio hatchback in Germany later this month and ahead of the official launch, the hatchback was subjected to the Euro New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) wherein it scored 3 out of 5 stars proving its crash worthiness. The Euro spec Celerio is sourced from Suzuki’s plant in Thailand, while the model on test was equipped with the 1.0-litre K-Series petrol engine. As per the NCAP norms, the car was subjected to the full frontal impact crash test at speeds of 64 km/hr along with a side impact test that was conducted at 50 km/hr.

Coming to the crash test conclusions, the Suzuki Celerio scored 23 points or 61 percent offering decent levels of adult occupant protection but scored poorly on whiplash protection for rear seat passengers. The car also scored a healthy 36 points or 74 percent in child occupant protection scoring 12 points for protection of an 18 month old child and 7.4 points for protection of a 3 year old child with poor protection indicated for the neck and the chest of the child.

In terms of pedestrian protection, the Suzuki Celerio scored 25 points or 68 percent with the maximum points scored by the front bumper providing adequate protection to the pedestrian’s legs, while the bonnet was regarded as offering very poor protection to the pelvis area. However, the car failed to qualify for the side pole crash test due to the absence of a side-impact airbag which is an optional feature on the hatchback. The European Celerio comes loaded with features including dual front airbags, front side airbags, seatbelt pre-tensioners, seatbelt reminder, ABS, ESP as standard on the model.

It would not be right to compare the India spec Celerio with the European model in terms of safety. Much like that seen on the European and Indian Swift that are poles apart in terms of safety, we really do not expect the India made Celerio to achieve even a single star rating in the Global NCAP crash test.

If the Swift results are to be belived, the India spec Celerio would get 0 stars
