Honda E-Clutch’s Affordable Version Under Consideration For India

Honda discussed plans for the Indian market at the launches of the Shine 100 DX and CB125 Hornet. Tsutsumu Otani, CEO of HMSI, shared insights about potential innovations. Honda highlighted its interest in clutch automation for budget-friendly motorcycles in India.

Honda’s E-Clutch technology is currently offered on its premium 650cc models, the CBR650 and CBR650R. Riders can shift gears without using the clutch lever with this system. It also works from a complete halt, adding convenience to the riding experience.

However, Otani pointed out that this exact E-Clutch is too expensive for India’s cost-sensitive motorcycle segment. Instead, Honda is developing a more affordable version of the system. This new system aims to provide similar convenience without significantly raising prices.

Otani mentioned that Indian riders may appreciate such an easy-to-use technology. The focus of Honda is on balancing innovation with affordability. Honda plans to retain manual gear control while simplifying clutch usage.

Globally, brands, including Honda, are creating various clutch automation systems, such as Honda’s own Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT). The E-Clutch stands out for offering automation and rider control. It delivers convenience without removing the core riding experience.

Outlook

Currently, Indian-made motorcycles do not offer automatic gearboxes or automated clutches. Honda’s system could be the first in the country. This move may transform everyday commuting for Indian motorcyclists.
