Honda Wave 125i Imported In India For R&D

The fuel-injection system on the Wave 125i could be of interest to Honda India that will find purpose on the manufacturer’s upcoming scooters.

The Honda Wave is a light scooter sold in several markets including Europe & Asia

Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) is certainly planning something big in the scooter space as it has been testing a number of international scooters at its domestic R&D centre. In a bid to dethrone Hero MotoCorp from the number one position, the Japanese giant is working on new scooters and replacements to the existing models that will hit the market in the future. Keeping up with the same, Honda has imported the Wave 125i in the country for R&D purposes.

Sold in a number of markets across the globe including Europe (badged as Innova) and South East Asia, the Wave 125i is an affordable light scooter designed to offer high power with low manufacturing cost. The Wave 125i is the fuel-injected variant powered by a 124.8cc single-cylinder engine tuned to produce 9.10 PS of power at 7500 RPM and 10 Nm of torque at 5000 RPM. Suspension duties are performed by telescopic forks at the front and dual shock set-up at the rear.

The Wave 125 rides on large 17-inch tyres wrapped around spoked wheels at the front and rear that offers good traction over uneven surfaces. With a dry weight of 100 kgs, the Wave 125i also manages to offer impressive performance. It is still unclear though how Honda plans to use the scooter in India. Light scooters like the Wave have limited appeal in our market which makes us sceptical for the scooter’s launch in the country. The manufacturer could possibly be looking at the fuel-injection system that could find purpose in its scooters.

Incidentally, the ‘Wave’ nameplate is currently in use by Hero MotoCorp for its electric two-wheeler that is sold in selective markets across North India. The Hero Wave DX is powered by a 250 watt electric motor with a top speed of 25 km/hr. The scooter can travel for a total range of 70 kms and also gets an anti-theft alarm and mobile charger as standard.
