India To Become Sole Production Hub Of Suzuki Jimny, SUV To Be Made At Maruti’s Manesar Plant

India-made Jimny will be highly localised

Production duties of the 5-door Jimny compact off-roader will solely be undertaken by Maruti as parent Suzuki Motor plans to make best use of its Indian subsidiary’s manufacturing capabilities.

Initially, however, the Japanese automaker is likely to import components of the 3-door Jimny from Japan and assemble it at Maruti Suzuki’s Gurgaon plant.

In a short while, by 2022-23, Suzuki Motor plans to make the 3-door Jimny and the new 5-door variant completely in India using locally-sourced components at Maruti’s Manesar facility.

This would make India the sole production hub of the SUV’s 5-door variant. Plans are to produce about 1 lakh units in India and export about half of it.

Currently about 50,000-55,000 units of the Jimny 3-door is being produced in Japan every year and exported to markets around the world.

When production begins in India, the total Maruti Suzuki Jimny production figures, 3-door and 5-door variants combined, is expected to be three times that of what Japan is able to achieve at the moment.

Suzuki sells the Jimny with a 1.5-litre K15B 4-cylinder petrol engine that puts out 100 HP and 130 Nm. The power is transferred all four wheels through a 5-speed manual transmission.
