How To Jump Start Your Car Without Jumper Cables

There is a high possibility that the next time your battery drains out, you will be stuck in the middle of nowhere with another car out of sight. Or the second scenario has the possibility that even if you find a good samaritan that does help you to boost your car battery, with no jumper cables that won’t be happening. So what do you do in such a situation?

Well there is the old school technique to jump start your car in case of a dead battery. Yes, by getting it pushed. However, this only works on manual transmission cars and will need more than a few people depending on the size of your car.

Things you will need –

  1. Strong people to push your car

Steps to Push Start your car

  1. Place your car on top of a hill or slope from where you can descend or ask for help and get the car pushed.
  2. Depress the clutch completely and put the car in second gear. Turn on the ignition, but do not crank.
  3. Once you start coasting and build up speed at around 10 km/hr, release the clutch quickly. The engine should start now with a small jerk, if it doesn’t start the first time round, depress the clutch and release again.
  4. The car should have started now. If it hasn’t, you better call someone to tow your car out of that place.

Things to Remember –

  1. Do not turn off the ignition once your car has started, there is a seldom chance that it may start again.
  2. Get your battery checked immediately to find out what was the issue. An old or broken battery will have to be replaced.
  3. Clean your battery terminals and wires regularly with a hard brush.
  4. It is best to buy jumper cables and store them inside the boot of your car; they occupy very less space but will definitely come in handy more often than you thought it would.
  5. Purchasing a jump-starter is also a wise investment especially if you have two or three cars and will cost you anything between Rs. 3000/- to Rs. 10,000/- (price varies as per model)
