KTM RC 490 Spotted Testing

KTM RC 490 Spotted Testing, Expected To Feature A Twin-Cylinder Engine

KTM was spotted testing a new 490cc twin-cylinder engine on an adventure bike and a naked bike. Now, a faired RC version has surfaced in testing, looking more production-ready than the previous prototypes. This has sparked speculations about its identity and future placement in KTM’s lineup.

Design Highlights

A single-sided swingarm, a design currently offered only on the CFMoto 450 SR S, features on the test mule. Closer inspection reveals similarities in the chassis and swingarm design with the CFMoto model. This indicates KTM may be developing its first motorcycle directly based on a CFMoto platform.

Suspension Details

Even with shared foundations, sharp bodywork, sporty tail design, and WP-branded adjustable suspension, the test mule carries unmistakable KTM traits. Familiar KTM switchgear further strengthens its underpinnings. The exhaust downpipes also resemble those of the CFMoto, suggesting significant engineering collaboration.

Outlook

This development has fueled the belief that KTM could launch the bike as the KTM RC 490. The RC 390 still uses an outdated 373cc motor. Its modern replacement could be a twin-cylinder 490, competing in the growing mid-capacity supersport segment.

However, questions remain regarding its presence in India. This is because it may be manufactured by CFMoto; local assembly would be uncertain. Pricing and availability will play a crucial role in determining its competitiveness in the Indian market.
