Mahindra is reportedly working on expanding the powertrain lineup of the Mahindra XUV 3XO with the addition of a CNG variant. The move comes at a time when demand for CNG vehicles continues to grow in India, offering carmakers an opportunity to cater to cost-conscious buyers while also addressing tightening emission norms.
If introduced, the CNG option would complement the existing petrol, diesel and electric versions of the XUV 3XO, making it one of the few compact SUVs in the segment with such a diverse range of powertrains. It would also position the model more directly against rivals like the Tata Nexon, which has consistently led segment sales over the past two financial years.
Industry sources indicate that Mahindra is likely to pair the CNG kit with the 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine featuring multi-point fuel injection (MPFI), which produces 111hp in its standard form. This engine is considered more suitable for CNG integration due to its simpler fuel delivery system, as compared to the more complex direct injection (DI) unit. Final performance figures for the CNG variant, however, are yet to be revealed.
Beyond expanding customer choice, the introduction of a CNG variant could also support Mahindra’s broader strategy of reducing overall fleet emissions. With stricter Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency (CAFE) norms on the horizon, alternative fuels like CNG can help offset emissions from the brand’s larger diesel SUVs, which continue to contribute significantly to its sales volumes.
One of the key challenges for the XUV 3XO CNG could be packaging. The SUV currently offers a relatively small boot space of 295 litres, and accommodating a conventional CNG cylinder may further limit practicality. To address this, Mahindra could explore solutions such as a dual-cylinder setup similar to that seen on the Nexon, or even an underfloor tank layout, which some manufacturers have begun adopting to preserve luggage space.
In terms of market positioning, the addition of a CNG variant could help Mahindra strengthen its presence in regions where CNG adoption is particularly high, including states like Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat, as well as metro cities such as Delhi and Mumbai. Sales figures from 2025 show that while Mahindra sold just over one lakh units of the XUV 3XO, the Nexon crossed the two-lakh mark, underlining the competitive gap Mahindra may aim to narrow.
The XUV 3XO CNG is expected to make its debut towards the end of 2026 or early 2027, although official confirmation from the manufacturer is still awaited.
