Mahindra’s Compact Xylo To Feature Twin-Turbos!

Mahindra might soon make a grand entry in the Rs. 5-7 lakh segment with the mini-Xylo MPV, if the document posted by Team-BHPian Sarthak Gupta is true. The document reveals the specifications of the diesel engine which will power the compact Xylo MPV. Mahindra has been testing the mini-Xylo for a long long time and not only has the car been spotted all over India but even in Europe. Now we know why Mahindra has taken so long to bring the mini-Xylo to the market and the delay seems to have been well worth it.

The company has plonked in a downsized version of the 2.2-litre, mEagle diesel engine which does duty in the Xylo, Scoprio and XUV500. However, Mahindra has not merely removed one-cylinder from the 4-pot motor. The company has added another turbocharger to the mix, making the 1.5-litre, 3-cylinder mEagle unit a twin-turbo powerplant. This has resulted in 100 BHP of peak power at 3750 RPM and 240 Nm of peak torque between 1600-1800 RPM. This engine idles at 900 RPM, while the redline is 4750 RPM! The twin-turbo unit is BS IV and BS V compliant too.

The 1.5-litre, 3-pot motor is also very compact and weighs just 185 kgs, which makes it very good for application in small cars. The twin-turbo powertrain is uses DOHC, 4-valves per cylinder and is made of aluminum. This engine is also high on fuel efficiency and is claimed to return 18 km/l. If this engine does make its way to the compact Xylo, then Mahindra will certainly repeat the XUV500’s success story in the Indian market. With 100 BHP and 240 Nm, the mini-Xylo will be very quick. The Toyota Innova produces 200 Nm of torque, which gives a rough idea about how powerful the compact Xylo will turn out to be.

News of the mini-Xylo being launched on the 2nd of October is also doing the rounds. However these are yet to be confirmed. The vehicle might be positioned as a compact SUV, rather than a MPV as the mini-Xylo’s nearest competitor (the Premier RiO) is positioned as India’s first compact SUV. The exteriors remain similar to the full-sized Xylo, while the interiors won’t differ by much. The mini-Xylo will be offered as a 5-seater with 2 jump seats for the last row. Some interesting slides from the document (which dates back to May 2011) have been attached below.
