Maruti Suzuki To Skip Global NCAP Crash Tests

The Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza holds a 4-star safety rating by Global NCAP.

Both the Maruti Eeco and the Alto were awarded 0 stars out of a maximum of 5

While India is aiming to move towards safer roads and mobility, the country’s largest automobile manufacturer Maruti Suzuki has decided to not send vehicles for Global NCAP to get them rated.

In 2014 when Global NCAP tested cars like the Maruti Alto, Hyundai i10 and the Ford Figo, the cars failed miserably. On top of that, the agency remarked that many of the vehicles that were tested had an unstable shell and even adding an airbag would be ineffective.

Talking about the Maruti Suzuki Alto 800, Global NCAP exclaimed that India’s best-seeling car failed to meet the minimum safety standard. The vehicle structure was said to be inadequate and would collapse to varying degrees endangering the occupants. Both the Maruti Eeco and the Alto were awarded 0 stars out of a maximum of 5.

However, that’s not all. Maruti Suzuki does have a 4-star safety rated vehicle in its kitty and that’s the Vitara Brezza. The popular compact SUV was awarded 4 stars for adult occupant protection and 2 stars for child occupant protection. The Maruti Ertiga scored 3 stars in October 2019 for both adult and child occupant protection. The structure was rated as a borderline unstable performance which can and should be improved. While the head and neck protection for adult occupants was rated good for the Ertiga, two other Maruti cars received a 2-star safety rating: The Swift and the Wagon R.

Coming to 5-star rated vehicles, the Tata Nexon was the first Indian vehicle to bag a full 5-star rating followed by the Altroz premium hatchback. In January 2019, the Mahindra XUV300 became the safest Indian car tested by the agency with 5 stars for adult occupant protection and 4 stars for child occupant protection.
