Mercedes-AMG has introduced updated versions of its high-performance GLE 63 S and GLS 63 SUVs as part of their mid-cycle refresh. The headline change is the adoption of the latest M177 EVO 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which brings a series of engineering revisions aimed at improving efficiency and responsiveness without increasing power output.
The revised V8 incorporates a flat-plane crankshaft design inspired by motorsport applications. According to AMG, this configuration reduces rotational mass and allows the engine to respond more quickly to throttle inputs while delivering improved revving characteristics. The powertrain also benefits from updates to the fuel injection system, intake and exhaust passages, camshaft design and turbocharger housing.
Output remains unchanged, with the V8 producing 612 HP. An integrated 48-volt mild-hybrid starter-generator contributes an additional 23 HP when required. The system also supports low-speed torque assistance, energy recuperation during braking and smoother engine restarts.
Performance figures continue to be impressive for both SUVs. The AMG GLE 63 S can accelerate from 0-100 km/hr in 3.9 seconds, while the larger GLS 63 completes the sprint in 4.2 seconds. Both models feature all-wheel drive as standard and are capable of reaching a top speed of 280 km/hr.
Beyond the powertrain revisions, AMG has updated the exhaust system with adaptive flaps that can automatically alter the engine sound. Suspension and chassis improvements include revisions to the active ride control system designed to reduce body movement during cornering. The front and rear driveshafts have also been reinforced, while the GLS 63 gains a rear-axle locking function for enhanced traction and stability. A particulate filter is now standard to comply with the latest emissions regulations.
The updated SUVs also reflect a broader shift within AMG’s performance strategy. The brand appears to be moving back toward mild-hybrid V8 powertrains after experimenting with plug-in hybrid performance setups in several models. Industry reports suggest future AMG products, including an updated C 63, could follow a similar direction. Meanwhile, Mercedes-Benz has already introduced the M177 EVO engine in certain non-AMG models, including the latest S 580.
