The Mercedes SLS AMG is going to be replaced by the AMG GT and the German automaker had revealed the interiors of the new sports car in April 2014. Now, the engine specifications for the AMG GT have been revealed officially. Rumours stated that the vehicle will get a 4.0-litre V8 engine and these rumours have turned out to be completely true. The Mercedes AMG GT gets a twin-turbo 4.0-litre engine that produces 503 HP of power at 6250 RPM and 650 Nm of torque between 1750 and 4750 RPM.

The engine that is plonked in the AMG GT is codenamed M178 and its dry-weight is rated at just 209 kgs. The engine also gets lightweight pistons and twin overhead camshafts. The cylinder heads come with zirconium alloy for maintaining optimal temperature and thermal conductivity while the cylinder walls come with a nano-slide coating so that there are no friction losses. The sand-cast aluminium block comes with a 90-degree quad-cam and it has the same bore and stroke measurements as the 2.0-litre engine that powers the Mercedes A45 AMG and CLA45 AMG. The two turbochargers are manufactured by Borg Warner and they use a water-to-air intercooler unit.

The Mercedes SLS AMG produced an output of 90.7 HP/litre while the AMG GT gives out an output of 126.3 HP/litre which is a very significant increase. This same engine will be used on the next generation Mercedes C63 AMG in Coupe as well as Cabriolet models, however the state of tune might differ. The Mercedes AMG GT will be launched in March 2015 and it will compete with the likes of the BMW M6 and Porsche 911.
