Mercedes Triumphant As McLaren Falter In The Canadian GP

Mercedes Regained P2 In The Constructors Standings, As George Russell Finished P1 & Andrea Kimi Antonelli Finished P3

George Russell won the 2025 Canadian Grand Prix ahead of Max Verstappen. The Mercedes had a great day as Andrea Kimi Antonelli finished P3. On the other hand, title contenders Mclaren had a catastrophic race weekend with Lando Norris crashing with Oscar Piastri, who finished P4.

Mercedes

The British driver defended his lead from pole position against Verstappen on Lap 1 into turn 1. He was able to make use of a 2-stop strategy to take the victory, as the race ended behind the Safety Car. However, Russell’s victory was in doubt for a few hours as Redbull protested his “erratic driving” under the Safety Car period.

The stewards rejected the protest, making it a good day in the office for the German team. Andrea Kimi Antonelli finished P3, making him the third youngest driver to get a podium behind Max Verstappen and Lando Norris. As a result, Mercedes to take 2nd place in the constructors’ championship, ahead of Ferrari.

Mclaren

Title contenders Mclaren had a disastrous weekend, by their standards. The Canadian Grand Prix was the first race of the season where the papaya team’s driver didn’t stand on the podium. Oscar Piastri started and finished P4; however, Lando Norris retired after colliding with his teammate while overtaking him.

The collision was similar to the Button-Hamilton collision during the 2011 Canadian Grand Prix. Lando misjudged the racing room and crashed into the rear of Oscar. While the British driver apologised for his mistake, it will be fascinating to observe how future battles between the two drivers will unfold in scenarios with higher stakes.

Ferrari

Ferrari had an average race as Leclerc wanted to go for a 1-stop strategy, but the team pitted him twice, finishing P5. Lewis Hamilton, who had qualified ahead of Leclerc, suffered a broken floor and brake pedal throttle after he hit a groundhog. The 7-time champion finished P6.

Fernando Alonso was able to finish P7, scoring points in an underperforming Aston Martin. Nico Hulkenberg finished P8, ahead of Esteban Ocon and Carlos Sainz, who finished in the top 10.

Championship Battle

Oscar Piastri extended his championship lead to 22 points, despite not finishing on the podium. Additionally, Max Verstappen remains third in the standings but is now 43 points away from Piastri. Mclaren needs to learn from this weekend and strive to regain the lost performance, which the Norris-Piastri incident masked.
