Government To Release New Fuel Efficiency Norms

The Government of India will release new set of norms to determine the mileage of a vehicle by the end of the month. Based on Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency (CAFE) norms of the United States, The fuel efficiency rage for a manufacturer will be determined by dividing the total sum of fuel efficiency rates for all its models with the total number sold. The new norms will go into effect by 2015 and will be mandatory for all companies to comply with. Failing which, penalties will be doled out. Star rating system is also being considered, which could see its debut soon.

“We are working on the fuel efficiency standards that will be represented in kilometers/litre of fuel. The vehicles would be classified on their weight to classify them under different levels of fuel efficiency,” Ajay Mathur, director general, bureau of energy efficiency, said. “The star-system is currently under discussion,” he added.
