Next Generation Volkswagen Tiguan Spotted, India Bound

The upcoming Volkswagen Tiguan has been spotted in the production guise in Canada. The SUV might be displayed at the Frankfurt Motor Show next month.

The new Tiguan looks much more sharper than the current car

Volkswagen has had a limited portfolio in India which has included mass market offerings like the Polo and Vento as well as niche offerings such as the Beetle and the Touareg. With all of its niche offerings out of the market now, it is concentrating completely on the Polo, Vento and the Jetta currently. However, it is in no way planning to keep its lineup so small and plans to launch five cars in the market in the next two years. One in the line is the new Tiguan which would compete in the premium SUV segment. The SUV was recently spotted in its production guise in Canada and a public debut of the same is expected as early as next month.

At the first glance, the new Tiguan looks edgy, sporty and upmarket which the current one fails to do. Globally, it competes with the Toyota RAV4, Nissan Qashqai and the likes. However in India, it will compete with the likes of the Audi Q3, BMW X1 and Mercedes GLA since the pricing is expected to be around Rs. 40 lakhs. Three variants of the SUV will be available as per reports which includes a normal five-seater one, a long wheelbase seven-seater variant and a five-seater coupe like variant to compete with the upcoming BMW X4. The latter two will be launched much after the former is launched.

Powering the Tiguan would be a range of TSI petrol engines and TDI diesel engines which are already seen on the new Golf abroad. It will be underpinned by the MQB platform of Volkswagen which is the base for most new cars from the automaker. When launched in India, we expect it to come with the 2.0-litre TDI engine in a higher state of tune than the one in Jetta and there is a possibility of the 1.8-litre TSI engine finding its way under the hood too. Since the SUV looks sharp and wouldn’t be priced too high, it stands a chance of tasting reasonable success in India if marketed well when it is launched sometime in 2016.

Design is inspired by the Cross Blue Coupe concept displayed in 2013
It will be launched in India soon after the global launch
Pricing will be the key to its success in India, too high and it will be a dud from the beginning
Alloys look classy and the flared wheel arches will give it that beefy look
