Nissan Leaf 2 India Launch Confirmed For This Fiscal

Nissan Leaf 2 India launch will take place in this fiscal year; EV to come as a CBU.

In the initial phase, Nissan is not aiming for low production costs

As the first step towards bringing its advanced global portfolio to the country, Nissan will be bringing its EV to India soon. According to recent reports on the internet, the Nissan Leaf 2 India launch has been scheduled for the current fiscal year. It is expected that the price for Leaf 2 EV will land up near the Rs. 30-40 lakhs (ex-showroom) bracket in India as the vehicle will be imported as a completely built-up unit (CBU). Homologation process for the EV has already started.

First up, Nissan India plans to bring a fleet of Leaf 2 EVs to Chennai for test drives. Based on the response after test drives, the company will plan further and take final decisions. Renault Nissan alliance plant is also located in Chennai. “We’ll make it available for the public. We want to make sure that it is used by a lot of people” Mr. Thomas Kuehl, President of Renault India, said at a conference. He also reiterated the fact that the company is not behind volumes.

Nissan Leaf 2 is among the best-selling electric cars in the world. The one headed to India is the second generation model (and hence the name Leaf 2) that was introduced in October last year. The 5-door hatchback measures 4490 x 1788 x 1530 mm (length x width x height, respectively) and has a wheelbase of 2700 mm. Powering the Leaf 2 is a 40 kWh battery pack that promises a range of 243 kms on a single charge. The electric motor dishes out 147 HP of power and 320 Nm of torque. Nissan is also working on a more practical Leaf 2 version that will offer a longer range (over 360 kms in a single charge) through a 60 kWh battery pack.
